Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is a full spectrum of learners. There are students who speak English as a first language, whose parents are college educated and have a career. Unfortunately, that is not the norm. Our school is a Title I school, with over 90% of the students being on free or reduced lunch. The majority of my students are struggling readers. Even in 5th grade, I have students that read on a first-grade level. I have students whose first language is not English, who come from broken homes, whose parents work 2,3 and sometimes even 4 jobs just to keep a roof over their heads.

But, even with all those challenges to overcome, they always give 100%.

No matter what is asked of them, they push through because they want more. They want to go to middle school, high school, and some even college, hopefully. I instill in them from day one how important it is to always try and always believe that they can do it.

My Project

My students will use the Microsoft Surface, pen, mouse and cover to get online and use the many educational resources that are provided by our school board. There are so many wonderful educational applications that touch upon subjects that we can only scrape the surface of given the time constraints we have. I also want my fifth graders to take photos and videos of their last elementary school year and include them in our end-of-the-year slideshow that we show the parents. The students take so much pride in making something that is their own. We will use the flash drive to move data from one computer to the other (from the classroom to the media center) and to save all the pictures and video and transfer the final product to their awards ceremony.

These resources will make all the difference in these students' lives.

They will get to use the Microsoft Surface, pen and mouse to truly immerse themselves into the educational resources and applications available. They will get to play all while learning. They will also store their pictures and videos for their end-of-the-year slideshow that reminds them of what they accomplished during their last year in elementary school.
