Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, I am teaching an inquisitive group of Gifted Third Graders that are cooperative and eager to learn. They are hands-on learners that like to work cooperatively. They enjoy asking questions and sharing their thoughts and experiences.

My students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds including Central and South America.

Most of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Some of my students speak both English and Spanish. A few of my students have recently exited the ESOL program which means they were learning English as a second language. One of my students is still in the ESOL program. A few of my students have siblings at home while others are the only child at home. Many of my students have both parents working and are in the after-school care program.

My Project

These materials will make a tremendous difference in facilitating STEAM activities in my classroom. STEAM stands for incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. My students will be able to plan, design, create, test and learn through hands on activities. These materials will also enable my students to work cooperatively in researching, reading, and creating their presentations.

My students need to learn through hands-on science, engineering, arts and math activities in order to meet the STEAM initiative.

By using the ready to use STEAM kits, my students will be able to design paper airplanes and construct cars to compete against each other. They will be able to work in groups to come up with a hypothesis to see how far their planes or cars will travel and then measure the distance. They will be incorporating art by designing their vehicles, engineering by creating their planes and math by measuring the distance traveled. Then my students will be able to present their findings to each other, so these STEAM kits and materials including the measuring tapes, color copy paper and Post-It large papers will enhance their presentations and make learning more enjoyable.

Additionally, my students need the thermometers, eye droppers and electronic scale to complete the essential science labs that correlate with the pacing guides. They need to be able to measure the temperature in liquids after making their hypothesis and measure mass of pennies, pencils, erasers and other items using the electronic scale when completing the science activities.

Finally, my students work on district required computer programs such as i-Ready and Reflex math. They need headphones to work independently. They also need the rug so they don't sit on the cold floor when they work in pairs to complete assignments or read independently before testing on the Accelerated Reading.
