My Students

As an occupational therapist in a community school, I work with students who struggle to meet the demands of the current school environment. Most of my students experience great barriers to learning, due to various disabling conditions from autism to ADHD, emotional disturbances and learning disabilities. They often have problems communicating, difficulties properly expressing their emotions, decreased attention to academic tasks, and delayed sensory-motor development.

Despite their limitations, they are a highly motivated and hard working bunch who are always striving to make their teachers proud.

My Project

Many of the students that I work with suffer from decreased motor planning, body awareness and sensory processing. Teachers are always struggling to keep these students engaged and focused. They have difficulties sitting still in their seats and on the rug. They have a hard time attending to a lesson or independent work. They struggle to feel safe and secure in their physical body and to know where their body is in space.

The Sensory Steamroller has been perfectly designed to give my students the sensory feedback that their bodies need in order to remain calm and focused and in control in their classrooms.

In addition to being fun, it provides students on the autistic spectrum a much needed dose of "coping chemicals," in order to deal with the overwhelming way they process the world around them.
