My Students

"A'ohe pau ka 'ike i ka halau ho'okani"- Hawaiian saying: All knowledge is not taught in the same school. I hope that all students understand the core concepts of this unit, be it through science, music, math, or visual art.

The students in this classroom exemplify the word "diverse." Students vary in ethnic background and socio-economic status, and their interests range from Minecraft to hula.

Though all students are in fifth grade, some students are beginning readers while others are reading at a high school level. Though my students are diverse, they share a few common characteristics. They all have unquenchable curiosity about how the world works. They also have another characteristic that ties them together: they all love to express themselves through the arts. As an academy of arts and sciences, students are drawn to our school so they can explore their natural curiosities and modes of expression.

My Project

This unit is STEAM inspired. Students will learn about sound energy through inquiry-based activities. Each student will use what they have learned in science (sound energy) and math (ratios) to construct a xylophone-type instrument with the materials requested in this project (fluorescent light sleeves and rubber balls for mallets.) Meanwhile, in music, students will use note values to reinforce their understanding of equivalent fractions by composing rhythms and later personal melodies inspired by math concepts (a device used by Bach, among others.) As a class the students will compose a rondo, where the class theme will be played in between each individual student's variation. In addition, students will learn about the Golden Ratio in art, then create their own original works of art using this principal. Then, using different art media (requested in this project), they will create "variations" on their pictures to mirror what they are creating with music.

This unit will give each student in my class the opportunity to shine.

To culminate the unit, students will choose which presentation team they would like to work with: science, music, math, or visual art. Each team will give a short presentation about what they learned over the course of the unit. After the presentations, the students will perform the rondo they created together as a class. Students will be able to demonstrate their proficiency in the subject they feel most successful in.
