Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am lucky to teach art to every student in the building which adds up to more than 500 students in a high-poverty public school. This includes first through fifth-grade classes, including bilingual classes and self-contained special needs. We are 85% low income, resulting in all of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch daily. Our school is located in a predominantly Spanish-speaking community with 50% of students being English Language Learners and 80% of students speaking Spanish at home.
My Project
My students need cardstock, toothpicks, and new stools for the classroom. Right now I am working on incorporating more STEAM projects into the art room, which has been an exciting change! STEAM projects blend science, technology, engineering, art, and math together, creating enriching and rigorous project ideas for my students.
I am looking to have my students learn how to create their own paper sculptures that are able to balance based on artist Alexander Calder.
Using toothpicks, pipe cleaners, and cardstock they must make their own balanced design. Which for many will be a completely new task! Their mobile must both stand and balance efficiently. I am also asking for two stools to replace the old chairs that I have in my classroom.
