Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergartners are energetic kids with a love of learning. Over 90% of my students come from low-income households. A large percentage of my families meet the definition of homeless. These parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!

My kindergartners worry about starting school (and staying safe), and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.

I am trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.

My Project

My students are so creative. They love to learn about motion and force with marbles and tubes. They love how magnets attract and repel with negative and positive charges. Debbie Sterling (Mechanical Engineer - IF/THEN collection) stated, "Engineering is basically just solving problems and building things that help people and make the world a better place."

When you believe you can do something, you can achieve it; and I want my students to believe that they can solve the problems they encounter in the world.

The items that I am requesting will inspire my students to create bridges and tunnels and turns and curves and learn about speed and force. Wooden blocks and tracks inspire roadway engineers, as well as mechanical engineers. STEAM activities help students to use their hands and manipulate materials to build and create solutions. Students construct buildings and creatures that bring to life their imagination.

Recently, I received a grant for individual Lego sets for my students. I would like to continue that grant with 10 x 10 brick boards and activity cards that will teach my students how to build mazes and 3-D structures with a foundation. I am requesting lots of colors, so my students can make oceans, forests, cities and make-believe places.

And finally, the Magna-Tiles will be used to build and replicate 3-dimensional designs. Students will learn color, shape, structure, balance and teamwork.
