My Students

Our students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of our students face health challenges due to the severity of their disability. Several of our students face additional struggles such as poverty, hunger, or homelessness. Our students speak many different languages and are mostly Black, Indigenous, or People of Color.

Our students have an innate capacity for connection and self-expression in and through music experiences.

Through music, many of our students are able to more easily access communication and expression modalities that build their self-esteem, resilience, independence, and community involvement skills.

In music therapy, our students are learning social-emotional skills such as cooperation, calming and coping skills, and kindness, so they can cope with difficult situations, and get along with peers and family members. Our students are also learning skills such as joint attention, attention to task, and following directions.

My Project

My students are incredible musicians, who love to explore science and math concepts through drumming. They are going full STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) ahead with tubanos this year! Tubanos are accessible and sensory friendly instruments that my students with various disabilities can play independently. We currently have six tubanos in our classroom, so not everyone can play at the same time. With these materials, we will have a classroom set of drums so every student can play.

Group drumming has become an incredible back-IN-school social activity, as well as a wonderful way to build in STEAM concepts such as pattern making, rhythm design, and discussions about music and the brain into our music therapy group work.

Having a classroom set of drums will allow our students to explore music science and music math concepts such as polyrhythms and complex drum patterns as a large group. My students are eager to drum together!
