My Project

Our elementary school library is a warm and vibrant hub in Queens. It is a student-designed library space where students ideas and inspiration to make their library the coolest place they can imagine. We even have an astronaut reading corner!

My students want to build castles, forts and couches out of jumbo foam blocks -- triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, and arches.

This hands-on STEAM and flexible seating design experience invites students to be architects and engineers and artists in their library. The celestial-themed reading nook will also include a smaller astronaut couch for the smaller students to read together.

Our engineering and astronaut corner supports all students to find the joy in reading. Students with ADHD or autism, and those who have experienced hardship or trauma need to find safety and comfort in their library space. This furniture helps students create cozy corners where they are in control of the design of their own space -- and can feel playful and inventive there.

Focusing on a book can be a process! The soft foam furniture allows children to build a fortress or castle around themselves to initiate a process of calming and focusing on the book in front of them. By meeting students' needs for vestibular stimulation and self-soothing, we make our library accessible and reading more accessible for all.
