My Students

My students have come from many different parts of the world including Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, Nepal, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and the United States. They come with tenacity, creativity, and a wide variety of experiences and gifts. At our school, 98% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and 96% of the students are students of color. The majority of my students are learning English as a second or third language. They are students with the capacity to achieve greatness.

My Project

"The world is but a canvas to our imagination": Henry David Thoreau. My students will benefit greatly from seeing the world as their canvas--they will be empowered to create their own future and define their own success. My students need the opportunity of learning through multiple modalities. With a variety of art supplies, they will be able to expand on the learning that we do in class and deepen their thinking.

"Every child is an artist": Picasso.

I teach in a Performance Arts Magnet school--art is part of our scholars' DNA. We will be using these materials in our literacy, social studies and science classes.

My students will use the water colors to express their perspectives on the literature we read and we'll use the modeling foam to show 3-D models of the engineering experiments we conduct, like oil spills and simple machines. We will use the stampers in math to represent numbers in data analysis and division. And the nature print paper will give my students a beginning understanding of photography and how light works.

Art is often the most effective way for my students who speak other languages in their homes (English Language Learners) to express their opinions and abilities. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity!
