Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
The students at our PK-8 school truly embody our R.E.A.L. Community values of respect, enthusiasm, accountability, leadership, and community. We are an "A" rated school (as determined by the state) due to our students' performance and growth on state tests. We're particularly proud of our score because we are an open-admissions school that shows that students from all backgrounds can succeed.
There are 11-12 different foreign languages spoken by our students, who come from around the world, including Syria, Honduras, Vietnam, Brazil, Pakistan, and a number of other countries.
We are a Title I school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
Students cannot learn if they do not feel safe. Unfortunately, there has been an epidemic of school shootings in the national news where students have been injured or killed. We want every room on our campus to contain a fire extinguisher and a door stopper so that students feel secure enough to focus on their learning rather than their safety, and so we can help protect our students should the need arise.
The police have said that two of the most effective methods to prevent students from being hurt by armed intruders are door stoppers and fire extinguishers.
By placing a door stopper under the door, an intruder cannot open the door to attack students within a classroom. If an attacker chooses to pull the fire alarm to get students out of a classroom, such as in the case of the Parkland, FL shooting, the fire extinguisher can be used against the attacker. If there is an actual fire, the extinguisher can be used to help douse flames and assist students to safely exit the building.
Hopefully we will never have to use the door stoppers or fire extinguishers in an emergency situation. Yet their very presence can provide peace of mind for our students and families, helping them to feel secure and learn to the best of their abilities.
