My Students

Our school, located in the Dongan Hills neighborhood of Staten Island, has a diverse student population with families representing countries all over the world. We have native Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Russian, Albanian, Gujarati, Arabic, Polish, and Albanian speakers. Our “melting pot” community of students work hard everyday to meet grade level standards and also find ways to improve their community and the world they are growing up in. The Student Council, a group of exemplary students in grades three through five, are working towards sustainability on the newly formed “Green Team.”

My Project

Our elementary school's Student Council is serving on the newly formed "Green Team". Their mission is to empower students and teachers to help the environment through waste reduction, recycling, reusing, energy conservation and pollution prevention.

Research indicates that students remember more and stay focused longer when they are hydrated.

Studies have found that that drinking water can improve brain function by 15 percent. When the brain is operating with plenty of water, students are able to have greater clarity, creativity, focus and quicker thought processes.

Students who do not bring water often spend instructional time at the sink, getting a "quick" sip. Another issue is that each day, hundreds of single use water bottles are thrown away in our school. A solution to both these problems would be providing washable, refillable water bottles to each student. We will provide every student with a bottle and waterproof label to avoid any confusion and germ sharing.

When our school community reduces , reuses and recycles as much as possible, there's very little left to throw away!
