Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can our school library promote health and wellness? We want to see our kids getting active. We want them to play sports. The 2 obvious sports to promote are basketball - our school is 5 miles away from the Miami Heat's home stadium - and soccer. Our city is soccer mad!

That's probably because so many of our kids' families are from Central and South America.

The Soccer World Cup is coming up this year, and David Beckham has just announced that he is founding a professional sports team in Miami, so soccer is very much in the air here. Why do we need your help to purchase library books? Our children come from disadvantaged homes. Over 80% are from households with incomes so low that the children qualify for free or reduced lunch. These kids tend to be first generation Americans. Their parents are immigrants with low-paying jobs. Our moms and dads work long hours in local hotels and restaurants. What does that mean for our kids? They are unlikely to have access to English-language books at home, or to be taken regularly to the public library. That makes the school library here at our K-8 Center a very important resource for them. We don't have an affluent PTA to help us purchase books, but we do - thank goodness - have Donors Choose.

My Project

I have put together a package of 34 books about basketball and soccer. They teach kids how to play each game. There are also books on the Miami Heat and on individual Heat players. There is even a book about science projects involving basketball. The soccer books include several titles about the 2014 World Cup. To attract the kids to the sports shelves, we have also included a Miami Heat pendant and a mini 'Brazuca': that's the colorful soccer ball designed especially for this year's World Cup. (These last two items are important: it's not just a question of having lots of merchandise in the store: you have to SELL it. We need bright, interesting items to put on the shelves alongside the books.) One very important point about these books: they come from a company that specializes in books for libraries. That means that they are extra tough and that they come with bibliographic records for our library computer. Only the strong books survive in a kids' library!

At home, our kids don't get much access to reading materials in English.

Please help us solve that problem. And help us get those kids moving! These basketball and soccer-themed books are sure to enthuse them!
