Staying Cool While Racing the Sun: Solar Car Cooling System

My Students

While we may not be able to physically meet, my students continue to work remotely on our solar cruiser, the first 4-seater solar car in the state of Florida. My students have been collaborating remotely through Zoom, Discord, and other online means to continue to design this innovative project.

Our students are resilient and have become an online learning community as they collaborate remotely to design our solar cruiser.

The hundreds of hours our students are putting into digital design will save time and money when we get back together to physically build this full-size alternative energy vehicle.

My Project

This pandemic has transitioned our solar car project to an online platform where we are dedicating more time into meticulously designing every component of the car. Once I have these teaching manipulatives in hand, I can photograph and 3D scan these items to digitally share with my students so they may reverse engineer them in Fusion360. Students will use Computer-Aided Design to model these parts and virtually build the battery and passenger cooling systems using Fusion360 software. I will then check their work by evaluating the digital renderings of these manipulatives I have at home.

Our students will be able to completely engineer and design both the battery cooling system and passenger cooling systems through collaborating online through Fusion360.

This will save a lot of time when we come back together to physically build the school's solar car's cooling system using these school-owned parts. Students are learning more about the real engineering process where everything is designed in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) prior to building physical products. Having the actual parts in my hand will allow me to challenge my students to create realistic, accurate models so that when we do return to school, these parts will install seamlessly into our school's solar car.
