My Students

My curious and energetic second graders come from diverse backgrounds. This school year I have 20 scholars that are creative and eager to learn new things. They love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions.

My Project

I would like my 2nd grade scholars to have an air conditioning unit in our classroom to optimize learning. Our children have just returned to school after a year and a half away from the classroom due to the pandemic, and damage to homes and businesses from the recent flooding. They have returned to our school without adequate climate control and unbearable temperatures in our classroom. More than 50% of our school year from late April, May, June, August, September, and the beginning of October, we are learning in oppressive temperatures in a sweltering classroom. Despite the two box fans I have personally purchased for my classroom, the high temperatures cause my students to have difficulty staying alert to learn. Recently one student suffered a nose bleed due to the heat. Studies show, “When students are exposed to the hot weather it can reduce concentration, problem solving, social skills and more.” A comfortable classroom environment is essential for learning for my scholars.

“HOT CLASSROOMS MAKE IT HARDER TO LEARN”

This portable, stand alone air conditioner is a way to have a safe, cool, and productive learning environment for my scholars. “Studies show that cognitive and concentration levels decline significantly once a room reaches 82 degrees affecting children's ability to learn and engage with new material.” The lack of air conditioning in our classroom is creating an unsafe and unproductive learning environment. “Black and Hispanic students are more likely to attend high-poverty schools, which are more likely to lack air conditioning.”

During a pandemic, this air conditioner will provide better air quality, higher assessment scores, academic performance, quiet and closed room for students so they can hear the teacher well, cooled space in the most appropriate temperature, filtered air (preventing allergens, such as dust and pollen from entering the classroom).
