Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are like students in any other class: they have likes and dislikes, things they are good at and things they need help with, and a personality all their own. Unlike other classes, however, all of my students need intense support developing and maintaining appropriate social interaction and self-regulation skills, which we work on every day. We explicitly teach and model how to handle the seemingly trivial to the obviously overwhelming, and then as a class we practice, practice, practice!

What I love about my students is how they thrive in our classroom community.

Every student who comes to our class has a history of being unsuccessful at school. After a short time in our room, they develop their social skills and also see that other students in the class are working on the same things, and their self-confidence and self-efficacy grow. They congratulate each other on successes and console each other when life gets hard. While challenges still arise, they all do their best to keep trying!

My Project

Every student in my class has come to me to work on their social/emotional learning deficits and develop their prosocial behavior. This is no easy task for most adults, let alone for five- to eight-year-old children. Some students struggle, mostly with their social interaction behaviors, such as difficulty taking turns or frequently using inappropriate language to peers and adults. Others struggle more with their emotional regulation abilities, like staying calm when frustrated, or knowing what to do when they experience strong emotions.

Having access to sensory items such as play dough or slime for a quick break, or a weighted blanket to use when upset, is so crucial for my students.

Often they aren't sure about trying a new way to handle life but using fun materials and engaging in tactile experiences provides a lot of buy in for them, and almost always improves their social/emotional well-being.
