My Students

I am an Adapted Physical Education teacher that works with students from PK - 5th grade with Visual Impairments. I miss them so much!! They bring so much joy and laughter into our classes. My students love to move! In APE classes, they dance, do obstacle courses, and play sports, but they also have specific needs that cannot always be met by traditional equipment. We will be distance learning in the Fall, and many of my students do not have access to equipment that will help them remain active at home and engaged during our Adapted PE sessions over Zoom.

All students should have the opportunity to play sports and participate in PE.

Having access to appropriate equipment will help my students participate in Adapted PE, and also encourage them to stay active at home!

My Project

As an Adapted PE teacher, I modify games, activities and equipment so that everyone can be successful. My students LOVE to move and participate in our activities, but not all of them have access to equipment that suits their needs at home.

My students with visual impairments receive most information from their tactile and auditory senses.

Items like the scarves and wristbands with bells are helpful (and fun!) for them for during movement activities. The grab balls are easier for students of all levels to hold and catch, and I will be adding the bells to the inside of them to provide the auditory cues so that my students can gauge when the ball is being rolled or tossed to them. The jump ropes can be used in the traditional way or as an obstacle they feel with their feet or hands to follow or maneuver around.

I plan to create an equipment package for families to use at home so that they can continue to work on their APE activities and goals at home.
