My Title I classroom has a wide range of learners. I am trying to promote higher level questioning, as well as having students jot down their thoughts and inferences during guided reading. My lower level readers and ESL students need some encouragement and materials to make this activity a success.
My students are inquisitive, and are very interested in learning about new content.
Some ask questions of higher order thinking, and it has a great effect on my lower level readers and ESL students.
We are located in close proximity to Fort Bragg Military Base, and have many students that come from military families. Our school is of highest poverty, and has received a grant this year for all students to have free breakfast and lunch.
Our school and community are very close knit. We do our best to help our students in anyway possible. We are trying to get more parental involvement for during and after school activities.
My Project
Third graders do a lot of writing during the day! Especially since we are putting a large focus on close reading texts, and taking notes as we read. Students also work on writing down connections to texts, questions they may have while reading and answers to text dependent questions. As you can imagine, our pencils need to be sharpened quite often, which is why we need electric pencil sharpeners, and that's just during literacy!
During guided reading, when students come to the teacher table, my lower level readers need more encouragement to write down their thoughts. They tend to get nervous, or do not know where to begin when trying to answer an open-ended question. The Wallpop stickers will be motivation for students to write! They will be placed on the guided reading table and students will be able to write thoughts or questions on the sticker as they are reading a text!
Funding this project for our electric pencil sharpeners and large Wallpop stickers will help my students keep their minds and their pencils sharp!
Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts, feelings and questions about a character or topic by writing on their vinyl Wallpop white board. I want students to gain confidence in their writing and not be afraid to share what they are thinking.
