Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Engaging the minds of seventh grade students can be difficult! I teach English Language Arts at a high-needs middle school in the South Bronx. Many of my students are dealing with extreme personal and family situations (poverty, single parents, drugs and gangs in their neighborhoods) and so academics are not always their first priority. Therefore, when they show an interest in a particular topic or activity, I try to run with it and provide for them as best I can.

Last year, one of my students happened to watch the movie version of "The Outsiders" on You Tube. He came to school and told his friends about it, and the story caught like wildfire. My students were so interested in a story about growing up on the "wrong side of the tracks", and about how hard life can be when one if young; they could relate to the struggles of Ponyboy, Johnny and the rest of the Greasers. Many of their own stories were the same. Thinking back on this our conversations about the book, I began to tell my current seventh grade students about the story. It came as no surprise when they asked if they could read the book in class. In my five years of teaching, I have never had a student "request" to read anything. I knew that I have to jump on this opportunity.

Currently I only have three battered copies of "The Outsiders"in my classroom library, and so a new class set would greatly benefit my students. They will be able to read it together in class and discuss the many themes within the plot. Reading the books would also provide supplemental writing activities as well.

I believe that this book would be the perfect core novel with which to begin the new school year. It will draw the students in, while also creating a strong basis of reading skills from I can build on for the rest of the year. With your help, some, if not all of my students will have an opportunity to begin their paths toward becoming a life-long readers.
