My Students

Kindergarten is a very social year in school. I love this about kindergarten. Everyday is "the best day ever" because it's spent with "all my friends." The quotes above are from actual students in my class. The problem is that it is my job is also to teach them how to work quietly and INDEPENDENTLY.

I teach in an inner city school with a diverse student population.

My kindergarten students range from students with little opportunities and access to materials to students who have had many opportunities to create and learn. Our school strives to provide opportunities for all of our students so that all may have a rich background as they move through elementary to middle school. With more budget cuts each year, there is less money for anything other than the core curriculum. Although, I promote a talkative, engaged, and hands-on environment for learning, there are times of the day when students need to focus and work independently. These are the times of day when I need to focus on smaller groups of at-risk students, so the rest of the class must stay focused on an independent activity. Many students in my class have a great difficulty with this and I would like to give them the tools to develop sustained focus and independent motivation to do well.

My Project

I am requesting 20 privacy partitions to be used during independent work times during the school day. They need to be sturdy and long lasting because they will be used at least twice a day, everyday. I've also chosen some file folder games for practicing phonemic awareness and word building skills. These will be great because when a student has finished his/her assigned work, they can choose a game to take back to their seat. I've also selected a class timer that is visible to all. This will help to show students the time and amount of focus that is expected of them. We can start with short amounts of time and increase their ability to sustain focus. I'm excited to see the effects of these important tools in the classroom. Working independently is as important in my classroom as working collaboratively and students need an opportunity for practice in both. Thank you for considering this project.

I think that this project is very important to my young students.

They are just learning how to be students. They naturally learn collaboratively and in groups. The hard part of school is developing that sustained focus that is required later in their educational life when reading, studying, and writing reports.
