My Students

My yearbook students are some of the most creative and dedicated students I have ever met- but they have to be! Taking on the task of creating a yearbook is so much bigger than everyone gives it credit for.

To be a member of The Torch yearbook staff, a student takes on the roll of a journalist, a photographer, a marketing and advertising agent, a communication liaison, and most importantly, a photographer.

In order to make sure our annual has high caliber photography, our students need the equipment to do so (a camera phone can only teach so much!). Believe it or not, I have taken on the roll of yearbook adviser at a school where my staff does not have ANY cameras! This needs to change! They want the opportunity to truly understand what it looks like and feels like to be a real photographer, not just an ordinary student with a camera- and they deserve that opportunity to be as exceptional as I know they are.

My Project

When you think of working on a yearbook, you think about the pictures first! Many do not realize the amount of time students take capturing as much of a school year as possible. They are walking around the school capturing candid moments. They are in the cafeteria, after school at club meetings and events, at sports practices and games. They are at every dance and spirit week and pep rally trying to make sure everyone is included in representing their school year. And they do all of this with equipment that separates them from every other student who has a phone out. A yearbook staff member does not get the full experience and training they deserve without the equipment that helps them reach their true goal. Just like students in math need calculators, students in yearbook need cameras.
