Status of Soils and Water

Help me give my students a way to analyze their soil and see what kinds of things are needed for their plants to grow in a healthy manner. We also would like to complete a hydroponic unit.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a school that caters to new arrivals. All my students are learning English and many have interrupted education. Our goal is to have a our students speaking, writing and reading in English by the time they graduate. My students love to dance and sing and have put on wonderful plays for the last few years in our school.

This year for the first time ever we are offering Horticulture.

My students are pretty excited about it and so am I. Having hands on projects and activities allows them to become motivated in learning. we are changing the our perimeter of our field into a garden. At the current moment it is just over grown with weeds. Since it is our first time offering this course we are starting from the bottom up. We want this garden to be their gift to future students, the community and the entire building. Currently our school houses 3 other high schools.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to make a hands on connection between theory and practice. They would allow my students to collect samples and test them for levels that might harm the plants they are growing. The pH testing kit will help us with the hydroponic unit and telling how this variable will affect their plants.

Testing soil health is very important and with the soil testing kit students can see how the nutrients found in their soil will impact what grows there.

We had been learning about invasive species and how they can take over an area since their requirements are different and they have not predators. Now we will learn about how the nutrients available to a plant can influence how it grows and how the rate can change depending in what is available to the plant.
