Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a high-need school that serves under-represented students. I am currently teaching chemistry and many students struggle with this subject because they cannot visualize certain aspects of it.

My students are all in an early college incentive program in which they are able to graduate from high school with a maximum of 60 college credits.

They are devoted students who are very concerned about their education. My urge to help them is due to their desire to strive. They do not give up and are willing to accept a challenge. It is these types of students that I feel confident will be high achievers, and it is this desire that should be nurtured and supported in every way possible.

My Project

My students will greatly benefit from a van der graph generator that will permit them to have fun in class while learning about electrostatic attractions. I want them to see what chemistry looks like and feel how charges can be passed from one object to another or from one person to another. They will obtain applicable knowledge such as why lightning is conducted through air even though air itself is an insulator or why we are good conductors of electricity. I believe that this is a perfect way to attract their attention and invite them to become passionate towards this amazing science.

My main focus is to bring the microscopic feature of chemistry to a macroscopic level that the students can understand and relate.

With your help, these students will have an opportunity to love chemistry. You can expose them to the magic of chemistry and show them that with your support, budget cuts do not have to necessarily mean that their education and experiences will be cut short.
