Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are getting a second chance at finishing their high school education and changing their future prospects. At the alternative education continuation high school where I teach, my students are navigating all the challenges of life and working to recover lost credit in a school system that has failed them. COVID exacerbates their already challenging work of recovering credit while earning new credit doing current coursework.

My Project

My students have been learning from home, and as high schoolers, are spending several hours per day in front of a screen. They have enjoyed learning about art online and have made due with what little art supplies they could scrounge up at home. My students are absolutely craving some tangible materials that they can use at home to engage in hands-on learning. Because students lack basic supplies necessary for engaging in drawing and painting at home, these materials will allow them to fully experience the process of drawing and painting.

These materials will not only enhance the experience my students have developing technical artistic skills from home, they will also be the vehicle with which they disconnect from the screens and engage in artistic expression--which has been shown to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress.

The paper, paintbrushes, and assorted paints will supply my students with the basic materials that are needed for this course and are sure to spark some joy when they receive them. It is amazing to see what my students have created with little to no supplies, I can only imagine how students' creations will blossom with these simple tools.
