My Students

I teach at a Title I school in west Harlem. Many of the students receive free lunch. Our students come from various cultural backgrounds, and have various learning needs. Our class is unique since it is an ICT (Integrated co-teaching) class. Our class includes general education students, as well as students with special needs that have special education plans to help them learn and meet the state education standards. Many of the students in our class come to school without the necessary materials they need to learn.

My Project

Many of our students come in every year unprepared to start their year because they do not have the supplies and materials they need to help them be successful every day. It's hard enough coming into a new room, meeting new teachers, and starting a new year without having to worry about not having a pencil or a notebook.

This project will help students to enjoy the excitement of a new year!

We are asking for materials to help our students have more of the materials they need to start the new school year. We use our notebooks every day to write down our responses to our reading during reading workshop, and to draft new ideas in our writing. We use lots of loose-leaf paper to try out various solutions to problems in math, and explain our thinking in writing. (Which is tough to do!) We are also asking for some differentiated materials such as left-handed scissors, since we want all of the learners in our class to be successful.

Thank you so much for helping us start the year off right with the materials we need. Our students won't have to worry about not having the necessary supplies, and will be able instead to stay focused on their learning!
