My Project

At this current time, I teach 11th and 12th grade at a High School in West Philadelphia. Based on the 2022-2023 Student Enrollment and Demographics, there are 389 students that attend our high school with 70% of students residing within the catchment area. There are 25% of students who have an IEP, and 1% of students who are English language learners. The ELA data for standardized testing reflects that 15% of students scored proficient. Many of my students live around the corner of the school and yet arrive invariably late. However, inconvenience aside, I have had a life-defining experience teaching at my High School. Our students are incredibly kind, straight-forward, and with intentional guidance, can be incredibly curious students. I want to help nurture that curiosity to help them become people who can take action for changing their internal and external environments for the better.

This project is to help support my upcoming school year.

This year, I will be teaching three curriculum units focusing on anti-gentrification, W.E.B. DuBois as well as an art-history unit to discuss the history of racialization in Othello (by William Shakespeare) and There, There (by Tommy Orange). This upcoming school year, there is a dramatic change of schedule and pacing. I want to start the school year strong with resources to provide a measure of stability for my students and to support justice-oriented literacy in the classroom. In order to meet the scope and sequence, a flipped classroom will be necessary. Headphones, highlighters, and easel pads will help my classroom with meet the literacy needs of a flipped classroom
