Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help newcomer immigrant students learn English while learning about an important part in American history!!! Help students prepare for high school graduation, college, and beyond as they learn about classic American literature, a necessary component in any curriculum. High needs, urban bilingual Spanish high school for recent immigrants. My students are 11th grade intermediate level English/ESL students in need of learning the English language but also of acquiring a basic understanding of classic American literature.

Being an adolescent is hard enough. Mix in moving to a new country, adjusting to a new culture and trying to learn a different language, all while trying to prepare for high stakes testing, graduation and college. Feeling overwhelmed yet? My students are in that exact situation. It is our duty to provide them with the supplies and skills they will need to have a fighting chance at success in the future. And YOU can help!

My students will learn the historical and cultural relevance of the Colonial era by reading "The Scarlet Letter." Through collaboration with other team teachers, the students will learn about this part of American history which now seems distant, remote and maybe imaginary. An interdisciplinary approach through English and Social Studies will provide a thorough context in which to understand this novel era. If my students were given copies of this book, it will help them in 3 TANGIBLE WAYS: 1) They will learn more English through studying literature (thus empowering them to be more successful students and new denizens in this country). 2) They may use this story as a reference on the Regents, a high stakes exam they will take at the end of the year which requires allusions to classic American literature. 3) They will be better prepared for college. A most basic understanding of the classic American literature cannon is not only necessary for college admissions, but also to succeed once they arrive.

You will make it possible for each of my students to graduate from high school having read at least one classic American novel in full. You are providing an essential component of any education--the actual books! You are expanding their understanding of a history and culture to which they are new. Your support would not only help provide my students with what they need for this year, but would make a lasting impression on their minds as they strive to understand this new country, language and culture. Donate and you would have a lasting impression by investing in their education!
