Starting New: Needing new Books & a Bookshelf

My students need a bookshelf and bins to organize our books by reading level. We will also read the graphic novel in the first semester and it's best to have a copy for every student.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being an adolescent and leaving your family and country to make the journey to the US because your life has been threatened and you are fleeing violence. Making the dangerous journey alone, you experience violence and often sexual assault. Then you are detained as an unaccompanied minor and begin the legal process to obtain political asylum status. You didn't have much schooling after 6th grade because your family couldn't afford it or you had interrupted schooling throughout your life. Now, as immigrants, you must struggle to survive in a foreign language and school. This is the reality of the resilient newcomer students that I have been teaching since February 2015.

My students risked their lives for the "American Dream" and I want to provide them with all the opportunities possible to become their best self and achieve their dreams here.

These immigrant youth want to be successful students and be able to contribute to their families and communities. And while our country is polarized around immigration, I think we can agree that all young people deserve a safe community to grow up in and an education that allows them to develop their abilities and reach their potential.

My Project

I have many books for students and their varying English abilities, but not enough storage area to organize and display them all. I have a lot of the smaller, learning to read/step-by-step books that easily get lost or overlooked when placed on a bookshelf with other books.

This year, I will teach 3 different levels of students that are learning English, and I want them to be able to find books that they are able to read.

The bins will be used to organize the books by levels and will be placed in the cube bookshelf. I also have a smaller bookshelf where other bins will go.

In addition, I will be responsible for making sure that all of my students have reading material for the daily, school-wide Sustained Silent Reading time. Having a new classroom bookshelf and book bins will help make it easier for us to find reading material for everyone.
