Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I've been teaching in Chile for 6 years and this is my first year in a US classroom. (pic is my Chilean students) I'm teaching all subjects in 6th grade and need these bean bags for our library space.

The majority of my students are Latinos and our school is in a low-income community in Oakland, CA.

My goal is to not only teach my students academic content, but to engage them with learning. I want them to learn to work together as a team, and to realize the importance of perseverance and of following their dreams. I met my students this week and they are full of questions and excited to learn. Many already enjoy reading and I hope to engage all of them and have a warm library space where they can devour literature.

My Project

I teach my students all subjects in our classroom and it's important that it's a warm, comfortable space. The bean bags will create a special place to sit in our classroom library. We'll have about 30 minutes of reading time every day and I want students to have other places to enjoy their books outside of their desks. The flip charts will help when students work in groups and need to present their work or findings to their classmates. These charts also work well for doing class polls and gathering other types of information from students.

I strongly believe the physical set-up of a classroom affects how students feel and therefore affects their learning.

I have already bought many materials and books for my classroom prior to learning about this website. I'm not able to make more purchases this month, but these items show my students that I care about them and have done my best to provide a warm and inviting classroom.
