Kindergarten is all about first experiences. Since my school is in a lower income neighborhood of New York City, for many of my students, this is their first school experience.
We all know that with the start of a new school year comes the need for new school supplies. On the first day of school, students go home with long lists of supplies needed to help make their year productive and successful. Unfortunately for several of my students from low-income homes, they are unable to provide these supplies.
The supplies I am requesting are the kind of things needed to get our Writing Workshop and Art Center up and running. How can we learn to write without pencils and erasers? How can we draw detailed stories without crayons? The stories and writing abilities from new, energized students is endless, if they are set up for success.
By providing the supplies necessary to enrich and enhance beginning writers, you will make it possible for their ideas to grow and develop, their stories to emerge and be detailed and their love for writing to prosper and soar.
