This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in a high poverty neighborhood, where many families are struggling and almost all students receive free lunch.

My class consists of 20 kindergarten students. Nearly all of the students speak English as a second language and their parents do not speak or read English at all. All of the students are very excited to be in kindergarten. They are all very eager to learn.

My Project

Black History month was established in 1976 by President Gerald Ford, declaring that U.S. citizens “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” I believe that educating my students about African-American history is extremely important. We will spend the month of February studying and learning about African-Americans who have made a difference including Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, Benjamin Banneker, Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson, to name a few.

To conclude Black History month my students will participate in a school-wide assembly in which they will perform a tribute to the first African American fire fighter in New Brunswick, NJ.

Students will dress in black tee shirts with a picture of a fire ironed on and one students will dress up as a fire fighter.

My class will be performing a tribute to Edgar Oakley, who broke barriers in New Brunswick, NJ by becoming the first African American fire fighter. He paved the way for many others including James Carman who 16 years later became the first African American Fire Director in New Brunswick.
