My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things fun and simple. I want to provide my students with creative and meaningful musical learning experiences.

My students are creative, talented and very eager to learn.

They like to play instruments, they love to sing and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of musical excellence.

My Project

It is always good to update a library with new books. In the world of music, new arrangements and compositions are always being written. It is time that we update our library to have a more relevant and exciting span of literature.

My students love to sing and we are excited about these new pieces they have chosen!

They are excited because the music contains popular music they listen to and some new challenges they are ready to take on.

In these pieces, they will learn to sing in three part harmony and in several different languages. They will not only learn the music but about the history and culture around these pieces as well. We are already dreaming up a concert theme surrounding all this new music. We are expecting to learn so much through it.
