This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My astronomy and earth science students deserve to see the beauty of the night sky up close and personal. Learning about astronomy is the greatest equalizer. Learning that we are all made from the same elements that were created in stars is a powerful thought and reminds us that we are all equal.

My students would benefit from the opportunity to view the planets and moon at night through a telescope.

The mental health benefits alone would be worth it, but allowing students to "live in the moment" and concentrate on what they are looking at is a powerful, hands-on, learning experience. My astronomy club is currently borrowing a telescope to use, yet it is not always available on clear nights when we have the chance to view the night sky. Having our own telescope would allow us to use it whenever we plan the evening and when the sky is clear.
