My Students

The students at my school are at once wonderful and troubled; curious and mistrusting; giving and needy; and worldly and sheltered. The circumstance of their young lives often prevents them from achieving academically to their full potential. The availability of opportunities to expand their knowledge beyond basic curriculum is often stunted, and it is through stakeholders and resources such as DonorsChoose that allow the children to be made privy to more than their "ordinary" education.

The children thrive with the benefits of high interest, hands-on engaging activities, and are eager to learn.

My Project

"Look up!" I've said this to students - either as they were not watching where they were going while walking in line, or reluctant to make eye contact due to fear or esteem issues, or simply as a metaphoric statement to help the children imagine their own futures! It's a subtle reminder - those two words - that there is something "out there" for them - something that perhaps, they may not have envisioned.

Astronomy can fuel the vision of the future!

After a recent field trip to our local planetarium, students unabashedly gushed about what they had seen- even wondering if it was all real! They thoughtfully mused about whether the stars and planets were real. Their reflections were heart-wrenching, as I (again) recognized the limitations of many of their lives, vis a vis exposure to The World Around Them.

We talked about the planet Earth, its small existence in the unlimited galaxies, and about galaxies beyond our own. And now, what better way to continue to stoke that inquisitive fire than to have this equipment on hand to see the stars and other sky bodies?! This telescope and these astronomy binoculars will give students tools to venture beyond their mundane engagement of seeing the sky. They will truly be able to "look up!" and imagine worlds beyond their own, which may very well translate into seeing possibilities that heretofore, we're not possible to imagine!
