My students need to develop reading skills in an engaging manner that teaches the power of story, and thus I want to bring the Force to our class with Star Wars books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
At my school there is an emphasis on being active and engaged in the learning process. This can be done through the story of Star Wars, which allows these students to see that even the most undervalued person (farmboy, outcast, etc.) can change the galaxy by investing in their growth. It empowers them.
We are a Title 1 school, where often the students come from harsh and dysfunctional backgrounds.
Nonetheless, we are taking a proactive approach to learning by connecting with the students and teaching them through what they are passionate about and providing the skills they will need to be successful individuals. With Star Wars back in the social conscience, with new films and shows coming out, the saga is a wonderful way to connect with the students because it is something they care about. Further, it is so vast that every child can see his or her self as a part of the galaxy.
Last year, I used Star Wars as a way to teach my students not just the required curriculum, but also the success they can achieve by being willing to take risks and venture out. In the modern world, these are essential skills. Due to the tremendous success that I saw through this, I want to expand the use of Star Wars in my classroom this year so as to engage the students in new and inventive manners.
My Project
These Star Wars books that are in my Amazon cart will be used in order to develop reading skills, a passion for learning, and distinct areas of the classroom for students to partake in activities. Many of our students struggle with reading and writing, so these materials are essential to their success. In the simplest of terms, these materials will be a crux of their learning, particularly for those who are looking for a way to explore learning in a way they care about.
Some ways that we will use the texts specifically include:
Drawing Conclusions
Reader's Theater
Project Based Learning
There are so many creative ways that I cannot even fathom it all.
The students will be blessed by this donation because it will show them that someone outside of their small world cares about them. It will support their passion, develop their reading skills, and develop a passion for learning in their spirits. Most of all, it will develop their curiosity and passion for learning.
How will this make a difference?
What does your dollar mean? It means everything to children who worry about their next meal or if Santa is coming this year. Such are the problems my students often face.
The smiles and joy that Star Wars brought my students last year cannot be explained. It made readers out of non-readers. It sparked creativity. It created conversation. All in all, it made for a community of strong and invested learners. This year can be all the better through your support.
