Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As I always tell my students, there is a universe out there waiting to be discovered. We love using the Internet to explore constellations, treasure hunt through foreign countries, virtually dissect faunae, observe time-lapse growth of florae, graph observations, and step into stories.

This is my second year teaching third grade in an inner-city school with a 97% free lunch population.

Many of my students are immigrants or first generation Americans with difficulties in language. They are highly motivated to learn and our class attendance is high. However, the most important thing to know about my students is that they are science geeks. Astronomy, biology, chemistry, mechanics, and technology fascinate them as evidenced by the wear and tear on my nonfiction library. When "Life" came out on the Discovery Channel we would spend Monday mornings talking about we saw and learned. Students would ask deeper questions and research what they could using mostly older books from our limited classroom and school libraries.

My Project

Not all of my students have home computers or have access to cable and we would replay footage on our classroom's desktop computer: imagine the havoc caused by 26 students crowding one computer screen! I would love to use the Internet more to help them explore those topics that capture their hearts and minds and take them beyond anywhere they have been An interactive whiteboard and projector would allow me to teach students how to navigate the Internet. I could show them how to conduct research, manipulate numbers and data on graphing sites, investigate geography and culture beyond their borders, and so much more.

For the everyday materials like pencils, paper, fiction and nonfiction books, I make the same sacrifices that every teacher makes.

But I want to go beyond the bare necessities and give my students something spectacular that can last from year to year. With your help, my students can be a tech generation.
