Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever been excited about a topic you're going to learn about in school? Well my eager third graders are excited to learn about Earth and Space. We need resources for students to use to support what's being taught in the classroom, independent reading, and as reference for research.

In a high need, low income school which was restructured a few years ago and is doing exceptionally well, I teach 3rd grade.

We became the first elementary school in our part of the state to exit Program Improvement. We were a 2010 State Distinguished School. This is due to the use of proven teaching techniques that are effective for all learners, but especially English language learners which is 80% of our student population. Our school structure is based on the belief that these students (and all students!) deserve a quality education and can achieve! We hold our students to high expectations. We just need support getting the materials we need to make learning engaging and effective for all students.

My Project

My students need expository texts such as Stargazers, What's So Special About Planet Earth, and Winter Solstice to read during our independent reading as well as reference as they conduct research for our Earth Science Unit. Our class needs nonfiction books about subjects related to our curriculum and other topics in which students show great interest. These books are of high interest which will help maintain the energy that my students are developing about reading. The selected books are excellent motivators as they are at a variety of reading levels, so all students get the opportunity to read them! I have been able to get my students excited about reading, but now I need to be able to give them nonfiction books they want and that can change their lives forever! We also have the AR tests for these books, so after students read them they can take a test on their comprehension of that book which is another way to track progress of independent reading!

Funding has been scarce and our children suffer.

There has been less funding to support public education, yet the demand continues to increase especially with the Common Core Standards. Our students need to have the tools to help them prepare for what is to come, and to create scientific minds through the use of quality literature and inquiry-based learning. With your support, you will help create a group of lifelong learners and scientists!
