My Students

I'm a special education teacher at a high poverty school and work with 3rd and 4th grade students in a 15:1:1 setting (15 or fewer students, 1 teacher, 1 teaching assistant). I work with them on all subjects, but we especially focus on reading, writing, and math skills.

My students are sweet, funny, hard-working kids who need a little more time and repetition to make things stick.

Many of them have experienced some real hardships, but they make me laugh every day, and it's really a joy to work with them. I can't imagine doing anything else!

My Project

Every year I have at least a few students who are just more comfortable listening and working while standing up. Having a little bit of freedom to move and wiggle means they don't have to spend so much mental energy focusing on holding their bodies still. It frees up their brain to focus on more important things. I'm always happy to let them stand, but then when they need to do some kind of work they either have to sit down or hunch over their desks uncomfortably. It's especially hard to do anything on their computers while they're standing at a desk that's really meant for sitting.

These standing desks would be spread around the room for students to use during whole group instruction or during independent centers, allowing them to work with more comfort and focus.

Bonus: It's also healthier for them to be standing and moving! The desks are on wheels which means we can move them and reconfigure them as needed and they're long enough that two students can even work together at the same table.

Additionally, this project includes a few lap desks that will make working on the floor with a notebook or computer a little more manageable. We love spreading out around the room when possible, but sometimes it's hard to balance all of our materials!
