My Students

According to a 2013 study of high school students across 42 states by The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, 13.7% of students were obese and 16.6% were overweight. Most of those students are Black and Latino, which make up more than half of my district's population.

I teach juniors and seniors of mixed backgrounds and learning abilities.

Some are the children of college professors and doctors. Others live below the poverty line. The one thing they have in common is the belief that a solid education will take them places.

My Project

I am requesting one multimedia standing desk to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The challenge I face is that some of my students struggle with living a healthy lifestyle. They sit in student desks all day and sit while doing homework and unwinding in the evening. Even if my students want to be active, there is little opportunity to do so in a public high school. By requesting this standing multimedia desk, at least one student can stand during class to receive his/her instruction or to complete assessments. It might not seem like much, but standing, even for one class period, is beneficial. Research shows that using a standing workstation may reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

By funding this project, you will provide at least one student the opportunity to stand for one class period each day.

In addition to lowering the long-term mortality risk, it may encourage students to think about how they treat their bodies and how long they stay inactive each day.
