My Students

I teach a wonderful group of second graders. They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. My students enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information.

My students are 7-8 years old, and sitting still all day is difficult for them.

I want to change that by using flexible seating to incorporate movement into our daily routine and to promote a healthy lifestyle for my students. I want them to dive into the learning, and allowing them to move in their seat will help them maintain focus for the tasks at hand.

My Project

This week my students saw a student in another classroom who had a standing desk. During our next rug time, several students raised their hands and asked about the standing desk. When I explained that it was a desk where the students could stand and move during a lesson, their eyes lit up. They asked if we could get a few desks for the back of our classroom. They like being able to move and told me they thought it would help them focus. When I asked what else would help them focus, they asked if we could get more Kore Wobble chairs. Right now we have a few & they are a student favorite.

This kid-inspired project is requesting exactly what my students have asked for, 2 standing desks & 5 Kore Wobble chairs.

These alternative seating options provide a unique option for students who need to wiggle in order to stay fully engaged with the learning process. These resources allow students to move around in a quiet way & reach their goal of being active 60 minutes a day. Students will be more comfortable, while increasing blood flow to their brain through movement. This will greatly enhance their attention spans & help kids who are restless or fidgety.

In health we focus on eating nutrient-dense food & how to create a balanced meal. Along with these lessons, we do an art lesson where students create a basket full of various fruits backed on black paper. This is a favorite art lesson, & my students have asked for a way to sign their artwork. I'm requesting silver sharpies so students can do this and red masking tape so they can make strawberries, cherries, & more.
