My Project

Students fall asleep or reach to their cell phones in class too often even with the most interesting topics. Engagement has been the most crucial aspect in teaching. We have been inspired by Peter Lijedahl's Building a Thinking Classroom in our teaching. He found out that most students were imitating teachers' solving process in our past math teaching, instead of solving problems using an engaged thinking process and their unique creativity. We have been creating problems that could insterest students, encourage their thinking before we teach students a new concept in our classroom in roder to innovate our teaching.

Students can generate more enthiusiasm and be engaged in learning more in the learning through thinking or doing process than using our traditional direct teaching method.

We call on students to stand up, speak up at the vertical boards with their group memebers together, thinking and discussing their understanding, ideas and solutions, while jotting the major thinking steps down at the white boards, and performing the reasoning and calculating processes.

We have seen the improvement in students engagement. Students are happer, having more initiatives and more interested in learning with our simple vertical white boards set-up. The old Wipebook vertical boards we used were flimsy and easy to tear, requiring update every semester. With these dry-erase boards, students will be able to write their ideas in a nice and clean surface without worrying about tears and stains. I just can't wait to see their beautiful work unfolding.
