My Students

The "Take a Stand Project" conducted by Dr. Nicolaas Pronk found that those "who spent an hour or so a day at stand-up work stations felt more energized, productive, and even happier."

Our school is a public exam school in a large urban district.

We stand apart from other schools both within and outside of the city because our students must take 4 years of Latin beginning in 7th grade until the 10th grade. For most of my 10th grade students, Latin 3 will be their final year of Latin. This is the year is when they put all of the skills they have been learning, studying, and practicing to the task of reading authentic Latin from important Roman authors. Once they have translated the Latin into English they face the tasks of showing how well they have understood the text and of relating it to modern literature, culture, and experiences.

My Project

These standing desks will be instrumental for student "break out" groups to work on a particular project or text. Students will be more alert and able to focus on the task of analyzing Latin literature. While they are standing up they can more easily move about the room to access resources for assistance and then quickly go back to their base. Students can also group these taller desks together for collaborative activities. The desks can hold a projector which can project a text onto a white board or a smart board for collaborative analysis. These desks will be just one part of our classroom, which will be set up to maximize learning in the 21st century. There will be traditional desks where students will sit to receive direct instruction and practice skills. We would love a "learning lounge" with comfortable chairs and a sofa for activities such as brainstorming project ideas, reading, or researching with our Chromebooks, acquired by my previous Donors Choose project

These desks will improve the classroom experience for my students.

I want Latin 3 to be in an environment that fosters collaborative and active learning. Having stations of standing desks will allow students to group off together to work on analyzing a text or artwork. Standing will enhance their focus and productivity, maximizing their time in the classroom. Since they have been sitting all day, standing will offer them an outlet for the pent up energy our students have!
