My Project

We only have 4 proper risers for my chorus of 90 high school students. I do have some additional platform risers, but they are not safe for my precious students. They are rusted and have caved in on more than one occasion. As a result, I have stopped using them and am forced to borrow risers for concerts from wherever I can.

Most of us are aware that the fine arts are not fully supported the way they should be.

Much is pushed to the side in order to put more resources into testing since so much emphasis is put on those results. But I dare say, the experience students have in fine arts classes like chorus are far more valuable in the long term. Students aren't likely to remember the information found on standardized tests, let alone use it in any meaningful way. But the skills and practices they develop in programs like chorus they will remember and use for a lifetime.

Our students deserve to be able to experience music and performance with dignity and safety. They deserve to feel like their passion is recognized, respected and appreciated by their school communities. Right now our performances are done in a cafeteria, with faulty and unsuitable audio/lighting equipment and risers that are falling apart. It is disheartening in many ways. I have spent my own money and time buying equipment to bolster the performance area the best I can, but in the end, the audio cables are stored in a cleaning closet and the risers are still falling apart.

Please consider helping me show my kids that what they do is supported and that they are worth the effort to get them what they need to stand tall and sing!
