My Students

Recent research is showing that people are more productive and comfortable when they have the option of standing while working. I have many students in my class who prefer to stand. Unfortunately, the desks are too low to allow them to complete tasks while standing.

I am privileged to teach 4th and 5th grade students with multiple disabilities in a self-contained classroom.

Our school is located in a low-income area with a majority of second language learners. My students are greatly challenged when attempting to access grade level curriculum. Many struggle to retain concepts and therefore perform far below grade level. While they are eager to learn new things, they need additional supports to access the core curriculum and meet grade level standards.

My Project

I am requesting 2 standing desks with stools to allow my students the option of standing while learning. Actively sitting or standing is difficult with our traditional desks and bucket chairs. Some students with sensory processing disorders feel more comfortable standing in class. Currently, their only option is to hunch over their short desks when given written tasks. This leads to poor posture and back fatigue. Given a standing desk, they can stand and complete tasks at a proper height for their bodies. Standing while learning keeps them engaged and allows them to move around as needed.

I am constantly looking for resources and tools that will help my students with special needs become active and successful learners.

Due to budget cuts, our options are limited. Providing standing desks will enable them to actively learn while providing an appropriate height for written work. Thank you for your support!
