My Students
As a former Parkview Stagecraft student, I can affirm and am proud that they are some of the hardest working students in the school. Besides building sets, hanging lights, running sound, creating costumes, working on run crew, and stage managing every drama department production and event in the auditorium, they are committed students in my classroom which is the auditorium.
It is so wonderful as a Stagecraft teacher to see students light up when they paint or use power tools for the first time.
Many of my students sign up for Stagecraft because of the need for a project-based course that they can excel in. Luckily for many of them, Stagecraft can be a class they discover hidden skills and talents, most of which they can continue to use in their lives after they graduate.
My Project
Our Stagecraft students are hands-on learners who stay actively engaged through classroom projects and drama productions. The most important part of engagement in Stagecraft is safety. The students are fortunate to be surrounded by expensive equipment that can become dangerous when not replaced over time or used safely.
A warehouse-style ladder, first aid refills, and replacement tools will all be key to the safety and efficacy of Stagecraft this next school year.
In our scene shop, where the students learn and construct for both class and productions, there is a loft space that is used to store previously made set pieces and large furniture props. It is our only air-conditioned storage space, so it is necessary to keep our props and furniture in good condition. Unfortunately, it is only accessible by an old student-built wooden staircase and ladder that are bolted to the cinder block. It is a safety risk, and because of its placement, it currently prevents us from closing the door to the tool/dimmer room. A warehouse ladder would allow us to safely take things up to and down from the loft, and then it could be easily moved out of the way. In addition to the shop, the ladder could also serve as a way to access the stage lighting without having to use our old wooden A-frame ladder. Besides the ladder, the other materials on our list will help replace broken tools and personal protective equipment, as well as refill our first-aid cabinet.
