This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a former Stagecraft student, I can affirm and am proud that they are some of the hardest working students in the school. Besides building sets, hanging lights, running sound, creating costumes, working on run crew, and stage managing every drama department production and event in the auditorium, most are involved in other extracurricular activities and/or employed due to their family's financial situation and still manage to juggle it all pretty successfully.
It is amazing as a Stagecraft teacher to see my students light up when they paint or use power tools for the first time, and then see their mind finally open up to the possibilities of what they didn't feel they were capable of.
Many of my students sign up for Stagecraft because of the need for a project but non-performance based course that they can excel in. Luckily for many of them, Stagecraft can be a class they discover hidden skills and talents, most of which they can continue to use in their lives after they graduate.
My Project
As our pandemic school year continues the students are dying to do more hands-on learning away from their computers, especially in a class like Stagecraft which is usually predominately hands-on. One of the easiest and safest units in Stagecraft to achieve hands-on right now is scenic painting.
These art supplies will be used for virtual and face-to-face students to have equitable access while learning scenic painting.
In the Stagecraft 1 Scenic Painting unit, students will learn basic techniques that even professional scenic artists use to paint scenery. Some of these techniques include: dry brush, spatter, lining, sponging, scumble, ombre, and washes.
