Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

As a former Parkview Stagecraft student, I can affirm and am proud that they are some of the hardest working students in the school. Besides building sets, hanging lights, running sound, creating costumes, working on run crew, and stage managing every drama department production and event in the auditorium, they are committed students in my classroom which is the auditorium.

It is so wonderful as a Stagecraft teacher to see students light up when they paint or use power tools for the first time.

Many of my students sign up for Stagecraft because of the need for a project based course that they can excel in. Luckily for many of them Stagecraft can be a class they discover hidden skills and talents, most of which they can continue to use in their lives after they graduate.

My Project

As a new Stagecraft teacher and a working theater professional I want my students to learn how to properly put together flats (the walls of sets). In a scene shop we typically use pneumatic tools to staple wood together to create a flat or use brad finishing nails to attach trim molding to flats for an interior box set (any show set in a house). Before I taught at Parkview, flats were put together with screws which can be costly because you must continue purchasing screws and screw bits needed for drills as they wear out easily. Staples and brad nails are more cost effective with our small budgets.

Beyond needing all of the pneumatic equipment, we are sorely behind on safety equipment to make sure that we are as close to OSHA compliant as possible.

I want my current and future students to truly enjoy working in the auditorium while feeling safe. They shouldn't have to worry about rope burns on their hands from flying scenery in and out because we don't have proper work gloves or that they are inhaling bad fumes while spray painting because we don't have respirators. My students are eager to learn every aspect of Stagecraft and as a teacher I want to make sure I am teaching them properly and safely.
