My Students

Imagine you're a student, and you arrive at school early in the morning only to see your teachers sitting in a circle, talking, and...maybe even smiling? And are those books in front of them? A staff book club is sure to foster camaraderie among teachers while modeling the collaborative spirit and the power of reading for their students.

Teachers still remember the thrill of walking into a classroom and sitting at a desk beside their peers before opening a book and getting lost in the unfolding of the plot.

While teachers work to foster a love of school in their students, they never fall out of love with school themselves. Once teachers earn their master's degrees and frame their diplomas, professional development becomes the time and place when they get to assume the cherished student role yet again. For many educators, the feelings of learning and growth that accompany the student experience are the endorphins that keep them returning to the classroom year after year. The staff book club is a form of professional development for teachers of all grade levels and content areas to engage in lively and intellectual discourse--and to remember why they still love school.

My Project

PBS's Great American Read endeavored to uncover the nation's 100 most-loved books. Appearing on this list is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a novel one reviewer said "should be required reading for the entire human race." With this testament in mind, my school's staff book club decided that Marquez's most famous work should be our first read for the 2018 to 2019 school year.

Reading the book and then meeting as a group to discuss its storylines and themes will foster morale among the teaching staff while accentuating our understanding of the written word, literacy expertise we can then share with the students who fill our classrooms.

And after the back cover is closed and the book club meeting attended, it is likely that teachers will recommend the novel to curious students in the market for a read that will capture their interest, deepen their language facility, and ensure that they love school.
