My Students

Students deserve the best of the best which is why they need these wonderful, award-winning books.

My students attend a high poverty high school that lacks a librarian and active library.

Many librarians purchase the American Library Association award winners after the announcements are made, but because we no longer have a librarian in our high school, my students haven't been provided the opportunity to read these high quality books. Over the past six years that I've been teaching here, the students in our high school have rediscovered a passion for reading which would be further benefited by these award-winning titles.

My Project

My students and I value literature at all levels (picture books, middle grade, young adult, and so on). I currently teach Honors Sophomore Seminar and part of their summer homework assignment required them to read a variety of Michael L. Printz honor books and award winners. Since then we've discussed the various Printz award winners and are excited about the 2013 award winners. Having the 2013 titles in class will help my next group of sophomores when they're given their summer homework assignment. My class library is the more current and used more often than our high school library since we lack a librarian. I love providing my students with engaging literature at all levels. Many of my students have siblings and enjoy reading picture books to them. Many of my students crave more non-fiction titles. Their reading levels vary which is why I'm including middle grade and adult titles that received ALA awards and honors.

Many of my students will be excited to take a copy of "Creepy Carrots!" home with them to read to their siblings.

A number of my boys in class are history gurus and will relish every page in "Bomb: The Race to Build--and Steal--the World's Most Dangerous Weapon". Our high free and reduced lunch rate prohibits many of my students from buying books, so they rely on my class library to find books to read. Helping me fund this project will reach students and children beyond my classroom walls.
