My Students

Students in my classroom are exposed to the idea of culture, even their own American Culture and how it may influence them or others. They engage in critical discussion about novels from many genres and cultures to attain a greater sense of the world around them. Students in the class are also encouraged to do independent reading, and I have more than 200 books in my classroom for them to choose from and check out!

Students in my classroom are discovering the joys of reading and looking at the world more critically through discussion!

I try my best to create a classroom environment in which students can feel comfortable talking about difficult subjects and listening to others ideas and opinions. Through analysis and discussion, they are acquiring understanding of others around them and ability to communicate positively with others!

Another key way students engage with one another in the classroom is through the use of technology. Students communicate outside the classroom with interactive videos, discussion boards, and shared documents. They accomplish dynamic products with the help of tech to demonstrate their learned skills!

My Project

In my classroom, I currently have 200 books to offer students for their Silent Sustained Reading, but many of the books are not current, and/or I am missing some key classics that students have been asking for, such as George Orwell's "Animal Farm." Every Wednesday I have students engage in about 30-50 minutes of SSR to spark a love for reading, increase their vocabulary and literacy, and give them some down time to support their social/emotional needs.

I would like more book diversity on my bookshelf so that students my find a book that speaks to them and their individuality.
