My Students

My students need extra support. Students at this school are hard working learners. They may come from homes that are struggling. More than three-fourths of them are on free or reduced-price lunch, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting an education. The students are multiracial, including 40% White, 31% Hispanic, 23% Black, 3% Asian, and 3% multi-race. This creates an environment of acceptance and tolerance for all. My challenge is to level the playing field so that students with fewer opportunities are able to compete academically with those who have more opportunities.

Creating learning experiences for these students is the best part of my job; the joy on their faces as they are discovering something new and integrating knowledge into their “personal toolkits” is priceless.

In my learning environment, I endeavor to set them up to win in an environment that is inviting and comfortable. Sometimes, that means school supplies, mending clothing, a band-aid or a kind word. I believe this will not only help the students focus, but will also produce a higher level of work from the student. Teaching these young learners is a privilege.

My Project

As a media specialist, it is my job to open students up to the world of reading. Nothing is better than seeing Kindergarten through Second grade get excited about reading a new book. Last year, I implemented Sunshine State Young Reader Award Junior books to my students. These are 15 books chosen as the best by a group of media specialists in Florida. I bought brag tags ( kind of like dog tags) of each book and when a student read the book and tested well on the book, they earned a brag tag to wear on a necklace to show off to their friends.

Last year was the first year I implemented the SSYRA program to promote reading for K-2.

What I found out was that when I did a book read of the SSYRA books, all the students loved them so much that they wanted to check them out of the library to share it at home with their family. I couldn't keep enough of them on our library shelves. The students have so much fun with all the lessons that our media specialists in our county put together for these books every school year.

The list of the SSYRA jr winners for next school year just came out today, and I would love to be able to have at least one set of these books ready for check out when the students return in August. Please help me give my students the gift of reading!
